Honoring Every Identity: Why Culturally Responsive Therapy Matters
We believe that every person deserves access to high-quality mental health care for all. Care should be compassionate, welcoming, and accessible, regardless of someone’s background, identity, beliefs, or financial circumstances. This belief is rooted in our principle that every person has inherent worth and dignity. When people seek support, they deserve to be met with respect, understanding, and genuine care. This is especially important for those from marginalized communities who have historically been excluded or harmed by traditional mental health care systems.
Historically, access to compassionate and quality mental health care has not always been equal. Marginalized communities, including people of color, immigrants, LGBTQ+ individuals, religious minorities, people with disabilities, and others, often experience unique challenges when accessing mental health care.
In a report from the NYC health department last year, researchers found that LGBTQ+ New Yorkers experience significantly higher rates of serious psychological distress and social isolation than their heterosexual and cisgender peers. The report also found that LGBTQ+ New Yorkers are more likely to face financial barriers when seeking mental health care.
While these findings are important, they tell only part of the story. Many people face concerns when considering therapy. They may wonder:
Will this therapist understand me?
Will I feel comfortable talking about my experiences?
Will I have to explain or defend my values, identity, culture, or religion?
Will I be judged?
LGBTQ+ clients may worry about being misunderstood or judged. Clients who are religious may worry that therapists will dismiss or disrespect their beliefs and values. Immigrant communities and communities of color may worry about stigma, language barriers, or whether a therapist can truly understand their lived experience. Effective therapy isn't about telling someone how they should live. It's about helping people better understand themselves, clarify what matters most to them, navigate challenges with confidence, and build meaningful relationships and lives that align with their values. Our clinicians work collaboratively with clients to understand their values, identities, and beliefs and how those fit into the life the client wants to have.
Droste’s commitment to accessible mental health services means more than making therapy affordable (though that it is important). It also means creating an environment where people feel safe, respected, and understood. Some of the ways we work towards that goal include:
Sliding-scale therapy options
Multilingual clinicians
Virtual and in-person appointments
Thoughtful therapist-client matching
Partnerships with trusted community organizations and faith communities
A commitment to culturally responsive and person-centered care
This June and always, as we’re celebrating the diversity of our brilliant and beautiful city, we are reminded that mental health care should be available to everyone. We believe that every New Yorker deserves support, connection, and the opportunity to thrive. We’re here to empower all New Yorkers and, for those looking for therapy, we will continue to work to ensure that every person who walks through our doors feels welcomed and respected.
Our commitment remains the same throughout the year: to provide compassionate, high-quality mental health care that honors the dignity, experiences, and humanity of every person we serve.
